Bio:
I am a resident of Garland for the past 11 years. Proud wife, mother of 2 grown sons and a grandmother to a 11-year-old granddaughter. I am passionate about my family, my faith and my community. I believe a School Board must be responsive and receptive to parents, staff and students as well as our tax payers. We should encourage an open dialogue among all of our communities and I am proud to have begun this work.
Academically, I am not your average school board member. I went to school during a time when dyslexia and many learning disabilities were not recognized. It was a time of one-size fits all. If your fit was uncomfortable, then you just limped along; or worse, left school. I struggled with traditional learning, which eventually led me to obtain my GED at the age of 16. I entered the workforce before my 18th birthday and never looked back. I can now proudly say that I am a successful mid-level manager handing millions of dollars of inventory. I have been employed in the Retail Industry for the past 20+ years. In my current role I am responsible for inventory in our 1,800 corporate owned stores throughout the US and Puerto Rico. My strength has always been in the ability to bring together cross functional departments to strengthen business goals and meet business objectives.
My experience as a student who did not fit the mold of traditional education is what gives me the unique and valuable voice on your School Board. A perspective that is still so needed at we navigate learning loss, and creating the changes needed to keep our kids engaged in school and becoming successful young adults as they leave us for College or Careers.
I have raised two young men through the public, private and charter school systems. I had the opportunity to raise my granddaughter for the first 9 years of current 11 years of age, 5 years of those in the GISD system. These experiences have prepared me and motivated me to want more for our younger generation.
I believe the School Board is responsible for keeping harmony throughout our District and all members of the community that helps support us – including those that no longer and never had children in our district. I do not have all the answer nor do I presume to know what our students and staff need. I do listen and talk with all different entities of our intricate school system, to get their perspectives and take their input into account when making decisions.
